Yesterday, I did some deep-dive research on a new topic and wrote a LinkedIn article about it, all while riding my fat bike up and down a snowy trail.
A year ago, that was impossible.
Today, with the help of OpenAI’s Advanced Voice Chat, it is not only possible but has the potential to become my preferred method of interfacing with a computer.
If you’re not familiar, this relatively new feature allows you to have a voice conversation with a ChatGPT voice avatar. The interaction is also recorded as a text-based chat for future reference.
It tops other AI voice solutions like Gemini and Claude in some important ways.
- It keeps the conversation active and open while you think and respond. It handles long pauses in your speech in a very human-like way.
- It allows you to interrupt its responses if you want to redirect the conversation or ask clarifying questions without losing context.
- It searches the web for more information when needed without asking permission and provides an audio chime to indicate what is happening.
- The voice is very natural sounding and has appropriate inflection when it speaks…so it isn’t annoying to chat with for long conversations.
- The context window is large enough to keep most, if not all, of a one-hour conversation in context. (Tip: ask it to reference earlier parts of the conversation every ~10 responses to avoid forgetfulness)
Tip: I was using Apple’s Beats Fit Pro earbuds, which I think made the experience especially effective because of their excellent voice recognition and integration with the iPhone.
Right around the corner, agentic capabilities will be available. So you’ll not only be able to converse but also direct actions like, “post this article to my LinkedIn profile,” or “add this draft to a Google doc and share it with my team for editing.”
This means real multitasking, and work can be done without ever touching a keyboard!
So, are you excited to redefine remote work to include your on-the-go activities?
To me, it feels like a huge upgrade to passively listening to podcasts or audiobooks.
